Georgian Bay, ON

Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve is located on the eastern coast of Georgian Bay. This region of Ontario, known as the Thirty Thousand Islands, is considered to be the world’s largest freshwater archipelago. The reserve spans 347,000 hectares of shoreline ecosystem, stretching from the Severn River to the French River. The Reserve contains over 100 species of animals and plants that are classified as ‘at risk’ in Canada and Ontario, including unique reptiles and amphibians.

The reserve also includes Georgian Bay Islands National Park, 5 Provincial Parks, 14 Conservation Reserves, and 2 ‘Enhanced Management Areas’ – 6 aboriginal reserves also occur within this area, though none formally belong to the reserve. Its population is estimated at approximately 14,000 people.
