Lac Saint-Pierre, QC
The Lac Saint-Pierre Biosphere Reserve is located on the Saint Lawrence River, east of Montreal, between Sorel-Tracy and Trois-Rivières, in Quebec. Ninety percent of the reserve territory has remained wild and unspoilt. The biosphere reserve covers 48,000 hectares and about 85,000 people live mostly in urban areas.
While, on the one hand, Lac Saint-Pierre is part of the Saint Lawrence Seaway (one of the busiest inland waterways in the world), it is also recognized as a Ramsar site. This title reflects the significance of the marshes, wetlands and the abundance of waterfowl found therein. In fact, the rich wetland habitat serves as an important stopover for migratory birds, and up to 288 species of migratory (and resident) birds can be observed there.
