Manicouagan-Uapishka, QC

The landscape of the Manicouagan-Uapishka territory is dominated, to the south, by the Saint Lawrence River, and, to the north, by the Manicouagan reservoir – a circular impression that is clearly visible at all scales, including from outer space. A network of powerful rivers, with strong (and as yet untapped potential for hydropower) flows through vast woodlands to connect these areas.

The hinterland of the Manicouagan-Uapishka area consists of a vast and dry plateau. Its surface is formed by hills (between 400 and 600 metres elevation) separated by valleys and surrounded by the Groulx Mountains massif, characterized by some thirty mountain tops exceeding 1,000 metres. The reserve territory covers 5,480,000 square kilometres. Baie-Comeau is the largest city in the area, with a population a little under 23,000.
