Redberry Lake, SK
The Redberry Lake Biosphere Reserve is located in southwestern Saskatchewan. The Reserve covers 112,200 hectares which coincide with the Redberry Lake watershed. At the very heart of the area is Redberry Lake, a saline lake, across which are scattered several islands. The landscape is characterized by rolling prairie dotted with seasonal ponds and marshes as well as aspen/shrub groves. One can also find small patches of natural mixed prairie which is very rare in this highly grazed and cultivated part of the prairies.
Redberry Lake is an important conservation site for several significant species of birds and can be considered a real hotspot for bird watching. The reserve provides habitat for 9 endangered, threatened, or rare species, and for over 180 other species. The white American pelican and whooping crane are just some of the star attractions that reside near or stopover on Redberry Lake annually. About 1,000 people live in the area and agriculture and livestock rearing are the primary economic activities in the region.
