Frontenac Arch, ON
Frontenac Arch Biosphere Reserve is situated in the Thousand Islands region of southeastern Ontario, at the intersection of the terrestrial and riverine ecosystems of the Saint Lawrence River. The area comprises islands and islets which serve as important stepping stones for migrating plants and animals. Frontenac Arch connects the habitat of both Algonquin and Adirondack Park.
A wealth of natural habitats such as deep channels, rocky shoals and bars, submerged cliffs, broad reed beds and shallow wetlands can be found within this flooded landscape. The reserve is a rich ecological zone because of the amplifying effect of intermixing and the diversity of species and environments. At the interface of Atlantic coastal, Appalachian forest, northern boreal forest, southern deciduous and Great Lakes Saint Lawrence Lowland forest, approximately half the area is forested. The reserve covers an area of approximately 150,000 hectares and hosts a human population of about 50,000.
